Beauty on the go: Treats for your hands and feet at an airport near you
Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Here’s a good reason to take off your shoes at the airport (other than to pass through security)—to get a pedicure. At airports in Cincinnati, Miami, Toronto, Hartford and other North American cities, you can check in at a 10 Minute Manicure kiosk for manicures, pedicures, waxing and other treatments. Depending on the time you have, you can get the quickie $15 manicure, which is done in just ten minutes, or a more luxurious $70 foot reflexology session. There’s a place to store your luggage, and techs set timers to make sure you don’t miss your plane.

The founders had people like me in mind when they came up with this idea. I get to the airport two or three hours early, as requested, but don’t too much enjoy the long wait before boarding the plane—after all, there are only but so many minutes that can be spent aimlessly scanning magazine racks. 10 Minute Manicure COO and founder Vivian Jiminez says that their goal is to eliminate what they call ‘terminal face’ (that would be me)—the dreaded look passengers often possess walking down an airport concourse. “We’ve observed when travelers spot our store, they look at our name, check their watch and enter with a smile,” she says.

The newest location just opened up at the American Airlines Terminal at JFK in New York, which is perfect, because I inevitably end up scrambling to get a manicure and pedicure at the last minute before I go on vacation, and it will be nice to spend the 90 minute wait time at the airport doing something productive, like getting pampered. I’m going to check them out next month when I travel and will report back!
